Freighting of cargoes rises by 10%, says NAHCO chief

Freighting of agricultural and perishable cargoes and other non-consumable products at the nation’s international airports has increased by 10 per cent, Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Chief Commercial Officer Seyi Adewale has said.

He said the air freight of such cargoes increased from about two per cent to 12.5 per cent in the last few years due to the export promotion policy.

Ghana seeks to increase export volume under AGOA

Ghanaian president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday said his government was strategizing to increase export volumes under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) from 29 million U.S. dollars in 2016 to 500 million dollars by 2020.

He said the government was working to institute measures to ensure the country took full advantage of the US market through the AGOA initiative.

US vs Russia opens door for North African supplies to Europe

US sanctions on Russia, recently signed – grudgingly – into law by US President Donald Trump, represent an opportunity for additional North African supplies to European gas markets. While much of the discussion has focused on the potential for greater US LNG imports into Europe, the main beneficiary is likely to be North Africa.

Whether the gas producers of the Maghreb will be able to cash in on this opportunity is another question.

Why foreign aid should be used to diversify local exports sector

Aid for Trade (AfT) is one of programmes guiding foreign aid for developing countries. AfT programme has helped in the establishment of supply-side and trade-related infrastructure in developing countries to enhance their trade performance. Since 2010, this funding has helped in developing export infrastructure in some African countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco and Tanzania with around 35 per cent of total AfT disbursements.
